Reduce shipping costs amid carrier rate increases

Posted on: November 8, 2010

In general, shippers can minimize shipping costs by asking for a volume discount from their carrier, verifying the shipping address with the carrier before sending the package, and by selecting the least expensive service for the time constraints of the shipment. Investigate a few possibilities with these popular delivery services*:

United States Postal Service (USPS)

  • utilize Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes to control cost and minimize transit time
  • consider Global Express for cost-effective package shipping to international customers
  • receive up to a 10% discount when paying for international shipments online

Federal Express (FedEx)

  • ask for a discount based on your memberships (i.e. USAA and Google Sellers) and/or American Express credit card usage
  • consider Ground for reliable, lower-cost shipping (see service map)
  • use the correct service (Ground vs. Home Delivery) to avoid residential surcharges
  • save up to 15% when printing Express labels online
  • receive up to a 15% discount when you open a new FedEx account

United Parcel Service (UPS)

  • ask for a discount based on your memberships (i.e. Ebay)
  • use the correct service (Commercial vs. Residential) to avoid residential surcharges
  • consider using UPS Mail Innovations to improve cost and transit time for high volume shipping

How many times can you recycle a piece of paper?

Posted on: October 29, 2010

According to the technical association of the paper pulping and recycling industry, you can reuse old paper five to seven times. This sounds simple, but how can you tell how many times any individual cellulose fiber has been processed? Luckily, the fibers check themselves out when their time is done.

Paper is recycled by turning it back into its basic form — individual cellulose fibers — in big vats of water and chemicals. Young, studly fibers, on only their second or third go-rounds, maintain their long, springy form. Geriatric fibers are brittle and eventually shatter. These pieces are filtered out or skimmed off in the processing, before the new paper is made.
