Why Can’t I Set a Custom Paper Size on My HP Printer?

by Chelsea Camper | Last Updated June 5, 2023

Some people are running into the problem with newer models of HP printers of not being able to set a custom paper size. This could be a result of Automatic Paper Sensing.

HP has started to introduce this feature to some of its newer models of printers. There are some people that are finding this new feature takes away their ability to insert their own custom size. However, there are still a few ways you can try to get your printer to print on custom size paper.

Ways to try to get your printer to print on custom sizes:

1. Create New Form Type

This method is similar to adding a custom size in Printer Properties, except you add it through the device manager. You’ll be adding a new default paper size to your printer.

Each version of Windows is a little bit different. Here are the steps for Windows 7, other versions should be similar.

  1. Go to the Device and Printers window from your Control Panel
  2. Click on your printer to select it
  3. Right under the tool bar with File, Edit, View, Tools, and Help (if you don’t see this tool bar, hit the alt button) click on “Print Server Properties” button
  4. In the Forms tab, check the box that says “Create a new form”
  5. Give your form a name in the “Form name” field
  6. Specify your form’s dimensions, units, and margins in the “Form description” area
  7. Click the “Save Form” button
  8. Click “OK”

You might have to save, close, and re-open your document and/or restart your computer before you see the new form listed in the default paper size options.

2. Install Older Driver

If you’re familiar with installing drivers or have an IT person who can help you (co-worker, boss, neighbor’s son, etc.) this might be a good option for you. Those who have had a previous HP printer that was able to set custom sizes can go ahead and use the driver for that printer. But, for those who have not previously had an HP printer that allowed you to set custom paper sizes, you’ll have to do a bit of research.

One HP printer that lets you set custom sizes is the HP9500. Drivers for this and many other printers can be found on HP’s website under Support & Drivers.

3. Use Letter Size Sheets

Let’s say, for example, you’re trying to print postcards with 4×6″ postcard stock. You’re having trouble setting the printer to 4×6″ and neither of the two methods listed above have worked for you. While you’ll be sacrificing some space, you can use full letter size sheets with four postcards on them instead.

While you’ll have to change your design a little bit, your paper will no longer be a “custom size.” It will be 8.5×11″, a standard paper size for most United States printers. Your printer should happily print on a standard size of paper.
