Question:

Can Shipping Carriers Scan a Shipping Label Barcode on Color Labels?

Answer:

It is best to always print your shipping labels on white papercan shipping carriers scan a shipping label barcode on color labels, but it is possible to print on color labels though you have to be careful!

Let’s talk about a few more related questions!

Why is it best to print shipping labels on white paper?

The more contrast there is between the barcode and the background the easier it will be for a barcode scanner to read the barcode. Because black on white provides the most contrast it is the easiest to scan.

When you add color to a paper there is less contrast between the black barcode and the paper. This makes it harder for your carrier to scan and can introduce scanning issues and shipping errors.

I absolutely can not print on white paper for my shipping labels. What colors can I use?

If you must print on color paper for whatever reason use a light color. Soft yellow, soft pink, soft indigo, etc. If it must be colored, get it as close to white as possible. The colors in the picture above would not be a good choice.

I ran out of shipping labels. Can I use lined paper for my shipping label or paper printed on one side?

The lines in the paper could interfere with the barcode so it is advised against using lined paper. It’s also not a good idea to use scrap paper that has been printed on one side for shipping labels. What’s printed on the other side can show through the paper and mess up the ability of the barcode to be scanned.

How can I make sure my barcode can be scanned?

When your carrier comes to pick up the package or you take it to them, ask that they scan the barcode while you’re there to make sure their scanners are able to read it and that when they read it they are reading it correctly.
