The fourth major question asked when looking into printing your own shipping labels is: What printer should I use?

We would recommend a laser printer that can handle labels, although an inkjet could work if your carrier accepts inkjet printed barcodes. There are many factors you need to consider when you’re buying a printer for shipping label sheets. If you missed our blog post yesterday I highly recommend you check it out.

Most of the following can also be found in the eBook from yesterday’s post, but let’s expand on a few things in more detail.printer for printing shipping label sheets

What to Look for in a Shipping Label Sheet Printer:

  • Set paper thickness.  Some forms, like the membership/ID card forms are thicker than plain copy paper so you’ll want to be able to adjust the paper thickness setting.
  • Special “Label” setting. There are some printers with a special setting for labels; while this isn’t essential, it can make things easier.
  • Label Printing Options.  Can you print multiple labels per sheet?
  • Check ink prices. Make sure ink isn’t going to run you too high; figure out how much it will cost you to print.
  • Temperature. Printers that run hot are not good for printing shipping label sheets. If the labels get too hot they can start to peel off prematurely.
  • Multiple trays. Being able to keep plain paper in one tray and labels in another allows you to print out reports on plain paper and shipping labels on shipping label sheets without having to change paper.
