Avoid 8 common shipping errors

avoid common shipping errors
Avoid these 8 Common Shipping Errors:

  1. Old shipping address.  Verify your customer’s shipping address on every  order.  If not, it can cost you $10 or more per box by your carrier.  Worse, your package may not get delivered and will be returned to you.
  2. Bad shipping address.  Use an automated address verification system (like ones offered by USPS, FedEx, and UPS).
  3. Incorrect weight.  Weigh packages on a digital scale.  Keep in mind that some carriers round up the weight to the next pound.
  4. Unreliable packaging material.  Use high quality shipping supplies including crush resistant boxes, sturdy tape, and shipping label sheets.
  5. Missing international paperwork.  Complete the appropriate import/export documentation (ask your carrier).
  6. Barcode doesn’t scan. Don’t cover your barcode label with tape and ensure your carrier can scan your labels printed with an inkjet printer or (ask your package pickup driver to test).
  7. Shipped wrong product.  Process orders more efficiently by combining your packing list and shipping label on one sheet.
  8. Shipped wrong quantity.  Have 2 people review the order before it’s completed.  This is a great way to catch the wrong product or the wrong quantity before it’s shipped.

How do you get labels for FedEx shipping?

by Raki Wright | Last Updated June 7, 2011

fedex shipping labelQ:  I am looking for shipping labels for our FedEx boxes. I see you have a few different types. Which would go best with the FedEx.com website?

A:  The 2 main shipping label sheet layouts (print shipping labels and packing slip or pick ticket on the same sheet) that are compatible with FedEx shipping are the LS-U (one 7.5″ x 5-1/8″ label) and the LS-6x4BL (6×4″ label).  The LS-U has 1 perforation, so that the top portion can be used as a pick ticket or packing slip, and detached.  The LS-6X4BL also has 1 perforation, so that the top portion can be used as a pick ticket or packing slip, and detached.  In addition, the LS-6X4BL has an area to the right of the shipping label that can be used for marking internal notes.

Another option would be to print the labels 2up or have the entire sheet as the label and combine a packing slip on the bottom portion; both of these options would require special software.  If you want to print the labels 2up, you could use the LLS-8.5×5.5-2up.  The software we use in order fulfillment is Shiprush for FedEx Shippers.

Question: My company would like to start printing our packing list on the computer but I’m not sure which of your products would best fit our needs. We are using Microsoft Word 2002 and a laser printer.  We will need to be able to hand the customer a copy after they sign. What do you advise?

Any shipping label sheet would work. It’s easy to get started with a  shipping label sheet template for Microsoft Word. A popular label sheet form features a 2 1/2″ x 4″ label (in top right corner or bottom left corner). It fits the need for an address label perfectly, and you can perform a mail merge to print out several orders at once.

If you are using a printer with 2 trays or feeds to speed up order fulfillment, you can print 2 copies of the packing list:

a) one copy printed on a shipping label sheet

b) another copy printed on a sheet of plain paper

If your customer doesn’t need a signed copy, then you can either print out a second copy of the packing slip or simply make a copy for the customer. This last method would work best if the customer needs to have a copy with his signature.

how should i store label sheets

Label sheets are sheets with one or multiple labels, used for order fulfillment, shipping, mailing, and warehouse organization.

The following conditions are recommended for proper use and storage:

  • 72 degrees F (+/- 5 degrees)
  • 50% relative humidity (+/- 5%)
  • Product should remain in original packaging until ready for use.

***We do not recommend duplex printing when using a laser printer.***

Can a printer with 2 trays or feeds speed up order fulfillment?

by Raki Wright | Last Updated March 16, 2011

Printer with two trays.

If you need to print order fulfillment documents along with internal paperwork to your warehouse, it is helpful to have a printer with 2 trays or feeds.  Typically, if a printer has multiple paper feeds, there is a “standard” and a “bypass” tray.  The standard tray will usually hold more sheets of paper.  While, the bypass is capable of handling heavier papers.

To process orders more efficiently, a shipping label sheet, where you have one sheet for the packing slip and shipping label, is usually sufficient. There are times, such as when you process international orders or need to print internal paperwork, when you need to print additional documents. Having your combination shipping label/packing slip in one tray and plain paper for your commercial invoices or other customs paperwork can make international shipping quite easy.
